Document databases on Layerbase

DocumentDB V1

Originally created by Microsoft and now a Linux Foundation project. Its own MongoDB-compatible gateway runs on PostgreSQL-based document storage.

Managed DocumentDB on Layerbase

Available from Solo at $5/month. Use the MongoDB-compatible endpoint and connection guide for your database.

Instant branching creates an isolated copy of your documents for previews, testing and migration rehearsals.

Create DocumentDB

A separate engine from FerretDB

Both projects use PostgreSQL-based storage. Standalone DocumentDB has its own gateway; FerretDB 2 uses the DocumentDB extension through FerretDB's interface. Existing FerretDB databases are unchanged. This is also distinct from Amazon DocumentDB.

Check compatibility before moving data

Test the queries, indexes and application features you depend on. The guided Atlas importer currently targets FerretDB. DocumentDB does not inherit FerretDB's benchmark results or point-in-time restore support.

Common DocumentDB questions

Is hosted DocumentDB available on the Free plan?

DocumentDB is available on Solo and higher plans. It is not part of the Free plan.

Is this Amazon DocumentDB?

No. This is the open-source DocumentDB project originally created by Microsoft. Amazon DocumentDB is a separate AWS service.

How is this different from FerretDB?

Standalone DocumentDB uses its own gateway. FerretDB is an independent project whose 2.x versions use the DocumentDB PostgreSQL extension with their own protocol interface. Neither product is the MongoDB server itself.

Does compatibility mean every MongoDB feature works?

No. Test your queries, indexes, transactions and application against the specific engine and version before moving production data.
