Choose your MongoDB-compatible engine

Choose a MongoDB-compatible database

Layerbase hosts compatible alternatives to MongoDB. Choose the engine your application needs; existing FerretDB databases stay unchanged.

DocumentDB

Originally created by Microsoft and now a Linux Foundation project. Its own MongoDB-compatible gateway runs on PostgreSQL-based document storage.

About DocumentDB

FerretDB

An independent open-source MongoDB alternative. FerretDB 2 uses PostgreSQL with the DocumentDB extension and its own MongoDB-compatible interface.

About FerretDB

MongoDB compatibility does not mean identical feature support. Check your queries, indexes and application requirements before moving production data. The guided Atlas migration currently targets FerretDB.

Need a different document model? CouchDB uses HTTP and PouchDB sync, rather than the MongoDB wire protocol. For the upstream MongoDB server, use the local CLI or Desktop.

Common MongoDB-compatible databases questions

Does Layerbase host the MongoDB server?

Layerbase Cloud hosts compatible alternatives. The chooser names the actual engine before you create it. Upstream MongoDB runs locally through Desktop and the Layerbase CLI.

Does choosing DocumentDB convert my FerretDB database?

No. These are separate engines. Existing FerretDB databases remain unchanged; moving data is a separate operation.

Where does the Atlas importer send my data?

The guided Atlas importer currently creates FerretDB databases. DocumentDB creation and DocumentDB migration support are separate capabilities.
